Alankars
Bansuri (Bamboo Flute) is such an instrument with which you have to always be in touch. You should everyday do its Riyaaz (Practice). The more you practice the more faster you'll learn the art. If you skip a days practice too its result will be seen the next day and you personally would feel the difference. So always be in touch of this instrument. Don't think that if you play for 5 days you can let go 2 days and then again you'll start practicing. It will do you no good. Your time learning the instrument will increase.
In the starting days you'll also feel some dizziness if you practice for long periods. But its okay. Relax and once the dizziness gets over, start again. This happens because your body is not used to it and you dont have the stamina. But dont worry over the time stamina will slowly increase with practice.
Try playing only sa/SA and see for much seconds can you play it. Minimum 30 secs is needed. While blowing towards the end you will find yourself running out of breath and thus the end portions will not sound properly, so during such times roll the bansuri outside.
Alankars help you to set your fingers right and for fast movement of your fingers. Your fingers should glide over the Bansuri. Below there are some of the alankars for your fingering practice. please practice every alankar 100 times before moving onto the next alankar. Minimum 100 proper repititions are needed to get you fingers moving and getting set to the instrument.
There are two parts to an alankar. First is Aaroh (Ascending) and second Avroh (descending). For Aaroh i will use 'Aa' and for Avroh i will use 'Av'.
Note: While playing, please say the surs in your mind also. PLEASE!!
You might think that its not important or you might even ignore it, thats why i am telling you that please say the surs in you mind while you are playing on the flute alongside. In the long run it will be very helpful to you.

By now you should be able to frame ahead's aaroh and avroh on your own because if you don't get the habit of forming it yourself then you might never learn. You will always depend on this blog or somewhere else to read the alankar first and then play it you wont be able to play it by yourself.
So even if it takes time please try to play the whole part by your own after just reading the starting two lines of the alankar.
And you are saying the surs in the mind?? arent you??

ReplyDeleteFor the alankars on this page, is MA/ma played with all 6 holes open (teevra MA/ma)?
ReplyDeleteNo, just open the first hole halfway to get shuddha Ma.
DeleteThank you for this daily practice.
ReplyDeleteThe most important & beautiful part is the strictness & reality checks that are kept at regular intervals. I diligently follow them.
_/\_
very helpful....no need of spl coaching.
ReplyDeletesir plz add the notes of the songs.
I don't know you but you r my guru. Thankyou so much :)
ReplyDeleteif i am not wrong There are no lower sur for Ga ,Re & Sa in bansuri
ReplyDeleteso can anyone clear my doubts :
when we play lower Pa,Dha,Ni..... with same amount of air flow we will get Middle octave Ga,Re, Sa?
Look, a certain key can never be another key, no matter which octave it is. Pa is NOT equal to Ga. They're different keys, and so are others. If you play a certain key with high or low air flow, you'll hear different OCTAVES. NOT different keys. I hope I was able to clarify.
DeleteAnd for your information, there are almost 2 octaves (15 notes) in a 6 playing hole bansuri (+ 1 blowing hole at top + 1 tuning hole at bottom).
DeleteUes you are right of u mant to play lower octave sa re ga ma than use g base scale flute in it sound of medium octave is equivalent to lower octave or start sargam from last hole if u using c scale flute
DeleteI practiced, thanks :)
ReplyDeletewhat is the difference between ni sa re ga re sa and (ni sa re ga re sa) . In short what bracket means. Thanks
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this wonderful article really!

DeleteHello sir your information is so helpfull for beginners like me.
ReplyDeleteI have 'A' scale flute and I found much more difficulty while playing 'ma' to 'pa' at a continuous blow or while going from 'ma'to 'pa' continuously. So what can I do to improve it..??
practice
DeleteWhen you start playing
DeleteSa, Re, Ga, ma, Pa, Dha, Ni,Sa
Sa, Ni, Dha, Pa, ma, Ga Re, Sa
Going from ma to pa is a very difficult task and also it's a second octave you are entering so blow a bit harder but the technique to go from ma to pa is very simple and when you play sa re ga ma going from ga to ma you must place your finger on the pa don't place your finger after you play ma if you are having problems with few days practice you will be ok
